Why I love ACT part 1.
When I reflect upon one of the things that has helped clients the most from Acceptance and Commitment therapy it is the idea of agency or choice. Believe it or not, despite whatever challenges and difficulties you’re going to encounter today, you have a choice as to how you navigate those challenges. You may not be able to make problems go away (nor would the approach advocate for that) but in accepting our circumstances fully we can find the courage to say ‘what next’. And it’s this courage that propels people in the depths of their struggles to seek support. It’s the actualising tendency that Rogers speaks about which just won’t let go even when we’re at our most desperate. There’s always a choice, there’s always a way we can react differently. What choice are you going to have the courage to make today? How are you going to react differently?
